The Operation Ore group action

The new dates for the Operation Ore appeal are November 11 and 12 2010.

No more will be said about the appeal or the evidence here as all related matters may now be sub judice. There is some existing information about Operation Ore and the group action on this web site.

If we are successful in the High Court, the international phase of the group action will roll-out in the form of other group or class actions in many, if not all, of the 60 countries that were, through an FBI-influenced Interpol, subjected to police raids based on the US Landslide evidence. The hope for the international phase is that each country where a fight-back is required will appoint a co-ordinator who will liaise with the group action team and copy its procedure in its own local campaign. After the UK, Australia and Canada are the two with the highest numbers affected by Landslide. The UK had by far the greatest number. Some other countries, however, may have had as many as 1,000 targeted. Australia appears to have plans in place for co-operation with the UK team.

If you were affected by Operation Ore, you can still join the group action, although pride of place goes to those who joined long before hearing the news about the granting of the appeal. It is free to join, but if you want to make a contribution see paragraph below on donating to the group action.

Offer to publishers

Publishers or agents are invited to discuss a finished manuscript, which tells the inside story of Operation Ore from the 1999 Landslide raid to the coming High Court appeal in London. An Epilogue is prepared and will be completed immediately after the result of the appeal is known. The author of the book is experienced writer, Brian Rothery, who is the co-ordinator of the Operation Ore Group Action. Interest, already expressed by TV documentary makers and newspaper editors, should help the book’s promotion.

What they did and said

The short video clip is The Raids.

Following now is Part 1 of The fuller video.

It was a three part documentary made by Bob Long for the BBC. The episode which featured Ore was broadcast on BBC2 9pm on 23rd March 2004. It contains footage of police being briefed prior to raids, the story of ‘Click Here - Child Porn’, the raids themselves, and Pete Townshend being interviewed by police. If you can make time to view it all, the rest is here:

The implications for the BBC

They are enormous as are those for most of the rest of the media that became the Jumping Jacks of the police during the course of the travesty. Some investigative journalist could ask why the BBC were so compliant that they allowed themselves to become 'embedded' into police raiding parties. A clue is how reluctant they have since been to help to admit to the truth. It will not take rocket science to ask at least one obvious question. Keep reading what follows.

The implications for the police

No further comment at this stage for legal reasons.

The implications for the IPCC

Following the first public exposure that Operation Ore may have been a grave miscarriage of justice in the magazine PC Pro on 31 August 2005, one of the action group submitted two crime reports concerning senior National Crime Squad police officers involved in Ore to the IPCC.

Following the initial rejection of these crime reports, the member submitted a further request for a complaint investigation into the commissioner of the IPCC. It seems that all three complaints ended up at the National Crime Squad Service Authority.

A question that may now arise as a result of the group action is as follows. As the Operation Ore group action appeal has now been listed for the High Court, what is the relevance of an ‘independent’ police complaints body that rejected information that the High Court has since accepted – in particular detailed evidence that it had no interest in examining?

Finally the police that ignored crime reports and complaints submitted by James Jordon (not his real name) over 7 years have now managed to change his status from that of plaintiff to defendant through the ludicrous charge of possessing a violent porn image, just weeks before the High Court appeal that he did so much to bring about.

What they said as Ore rolled out

Bill Hughes, Director General of the National Crime Squad

Extracts from relevant comments

"Whoever has been leaking is hugely irresponsible. It undermines us all if people think we're celebrity-bashing. I haven't seen any MPs on the list. Some of it is spiteful. People ring us up to say they know that Cabinet ministers are involved. It's untrue. But the crime is committed across a huge spectrum.

"These sites can be horrendous. The Operation Ore sites showed newborn babies being brutalised; toddlers were penetrated, children were forced into the most obscene positions. All this to the most haunting soundtracks, and over the music, you could hear the children's screams. It was blood-curdling." The interviewing journalist added, “The squad is now having to put sound-proofing in the rooms where they viewed the material.” And about some journalists in Canada shown the sites: “Several are still receiving counselling.” - The Daily Telegraph 29 January 2003.

The Operation Ore action team researchers who obtained the Landslide records did not find evidence to support the above.

Margaret Moran (MP) in Parliament 26 October 2005

"'Operation Ore, the massive police investigation into child internet pornography, identified over 7,000 people in the UK, including judges, doctors and teachers, who used their credit cards to download images of children being abused or even killed for their gratification. Police believe that that is the tip of the iceberg. Those who download such images say that they have committed no crime, but every single vile picture that includes babies and children being raped and tortured has destroyed an innocent life. Through the internet, criminal gangs are making money out of this misery. That has gone unchallenged for too long and the time has come to right this wrong."

Jim Gamble speaking to Parliament

Jim Gamble, currently head of CEOP the child protection agency and formerly the principle police officer heading up Operation Ore, said this as part of a statement he made to Parliament on18 December 2002.

"If you consider Operation Ore, in 1999 towards 7,000 people in the UK sat at their computers and accessed child abuse web sites. Three or four years later, that investigation is on-going."

And in a threatening aside to the listening public: "Trust me, I am a police officer. We will be able to apply our investigation techniques against you."

(Jim Gamble was formerly a senior police officer in Northern Ireland. As the group action appeal approached, he was busy trying to get Facebook to instal a 'panic button', an irony not lost on the action group and the thousands of ruined Orees.)

The so-called banner that thousands used to gain access to child porn.

Here is John Carr, representing all of the UK's child protection agencies, the IWF, SOCA and the Home Office on live radio.

Public caller: 'The men of Operation Ore were not searching for child pornography'

John Carr: 'Wrong! There were two buttons on the Landslide home page - - - there were two buttons, one that said child pornography and one that said adult pornography. The only people who were prosecuted under Ore, or not - not perhaps the only ones, but the great majority were prosecuted (used) the button that said take me to the child pornography'

The existence of such a banner-gateway has been since shown to have been an invention, but its assumption helped to ruin thousands.

You couldn’t make it up

This is what some are saying about a statement by Celt Ltd., the ‘computer forensics experts’ who assisted the police in the Operation Ore prosecutions. They used to boast of their involvement in Operation Ore, but suddenly they have dropped all mention of it.

But they do say this on their web site:

"The UK's leading forensic experts in Credit Card Fraud and related matters."

They certainly must be!

The protected names or ‘Jumping Jacks’

Apart from the predominant deceit of what the Landslide database actually contained, there is the subsidiary ticking time bomb that has come to be known as 'the protected names' or ‘Jumping Jacks’. It was rumoured from the beginning of Operation Ore that there were names of individuals in high places on the Landslide subscriber data base, not proceeded against by the police and prosecution service, which, at the same time, ruined thousands of other British families who were not so protected.

The police are on record denying that such names existed, but since the daring ‘raid’ on the US by the Operation Ore class action team in late 2006, which secured both the Landslide subscriber database and the FBI Landslide prosecution files, never before shown to the defence, the action team members could tell if such names really existed.

The great predicament for even the most honourable of the individuals thus protected is that such protection may have compromised them and made them the ‘Jumping Jacks’ of the police. Examples are senior public servants and politicians in a position to increase police powers and key journalists and broadcasters who are now reluctant to publish the truth about Operation Ore - indeed, who possibly dare not.

There appears to be no reason at this stage why any such names would be revealed in the group action, which is concerned only with those claiming wrongful arrest and prosecution, but it takes little stretch of the imagination to predict that the fall out from the group action could bring public pressure for any so-called protected names to be revealed and assurances given that no favours were exchanged for that protection.

What would be very interesting to know is how many of the protected names were informed by the police that their names were on the list, although there is no point in trying to guess at what further conversation took place about the matter.

Given that credit card fraud is now widely accepted as a reason for being on the Landslide subscriber database, any individual who knows that he was protected thus would be wise to announce it now before some later forced disclosure. The Editor would be happy to assist in the process of that revelation.

One reader responds after viewing the videos

I remember watching this BBC 'documentary'- a curious term for bovinely uncritical police propaganda - when it was first shown. I keep picturing that young police officer, brimful of virtuous violence and malignant malice, gloating to all the assembled about the people they were about to destroy, and maybe even cause to kill themselves. And his assertions, his rationale, the 'research' he referred to claiming that all who viewed 'indecent' material would go on to assault someone, were torrential, lying bull which the fawning, sycophantic journalists who lovingly filmed his Hitlerite speech wholly failed to pick up on. He was just a jumped up little twerp mouthing the lines his masters would be pleased to hear, in order to get a reaction - I suspect he must have known somewhere that he was talking crap. He and people like him have authorised, effectively, murder and devastation on a scandalous scale - 'suicide' is a euphemism, and he must have known it.

The clock is indeed ticking.
