Much of politics and law is concerned not with the betterment of society but with social control. Virtually all psychiatric procedures, and all that are employed to support the law and the courts are carried out as a means of social control. For excellent information on this, see these two videos.
Social control, practised for its own sake or for power purposes, inevitably leads to plea bargaining, criminal conviction, imprisonment, social re-programming through post release training or the alternative systems of acceptance of mental illness, mental re-programming, incarceration in mental institutions, drugs injection or worse. In either case, social control through conformity to published norms is the objective.
