MPs

83 MPs who failed us

During the ten year campaign to expose the great miscarriage of justice that was Operation Ore, not one single Briritish MP who was approached for help responded.

On the contrary, in the House of Commons 83 of them rushed to support and praise a highly misleading and damaging BBC series called ‘Police Protecting Children’. This series spread a number of falsehoods about the nature of the names on the Operation Ore lists, including the infamous and false ‘Click Here Child Porn’ banner.

Between the roll out of Operation Ore in 2002 and 2004, apart from a frenzy of lurid newspaper headlines and details of raids on ‘dangerous paedophiles’ there were a number of influential BBC filmed reports which revealed close co-operation with the police, both during the secret police planning phase and as ‘embedded TV crews’ during some actual raids (which can be seen from the example included here). How influential these, taken with all the other media reports, were may be judged by the House of Commons motion proposed by Tim Loughton MP on 25/03/2004, which follows:

“Early Day Motion 915 - BBC'S POLICE PROTECTING CHILDREN SERIES
Proposed by Tim Loughton on 25/03/2004

“That this House welcomes the BBC's Police Protecting Children series which began broadcasting on BBC2 on 23rd March; notes that the programmes are the result of 18 months filming by the team behind the award-winning documentary The Hunt for Britain's Paedophiles and give a unique insight into the world of a new major investigation team set up to investigate serious crimes against children including neglect, cruelty, shaken babies, rape and murder; notes that in the last 20 years, there has been a massive increase in crimes involving images of children being sexually abused and that the success of the internet is generating a huge workload for the police investigating paedophilia; notes that this is a dark and difficult subject that needs to be confronted; and congratulates the producers for raising the difficulties and challenges faced in this brave, thought-provoking and important documentary series.

”This motion has been signed by a total of 83 MPs.”
