The Quayle Effect
An interesting dialogue involving academics upholding the law, holders of inappropriate ideas and marginalised dissidents has produced some remarkable and valuable conclusions.
The principle academics upholding the law who are involved here are Ethel Quayle and Max Taylor, both formerly of University College Cork, Cork, Ireland, the former presently at the University of Edinburgh, School of Health in Social Science, Clinical and Health Psychology. Representing the holders of some very inappropriate ideas is Christiaan Xaviereis, Board of Elders, Church of Jesus among the Teachers, while the marganalised dissidents looking in and commenting on the Quayle/Taylor/Xaviereis argument are some of the intelligent individuals who marganalised by being accused under Operation Ore and related campaigns maintain largely private dialogues over closed forums.
Quayle and Taylor are major contributors to our current prosecutorial sex abuse witch hunt state, as they invented the Copine scale of child pornography images which is used by courts throughout the western world for the selection by judges of sentences appropriate to the degree of the seriousness of images viewed. Christiaan Xaviereis represents what is very much (publicly at least) the minority viewpoint of what is known as ‘boy love’.
This particular story begins with a letter from Christiaan Xaviereis to Quayle and Taylor.
“Dear Drs. Ethel Quayle and Max Taylor,
“I am writing you in relation to your work with the COPINE project. I am one of the elders of the Church of Jesus among the Teachers, which has a mission to the conscientious homosexual paedophiles, ephebephiles and androphiles of the world. We share a common interest in preventing sexual persuasion and exploitation of children and youth, as well as in aiding people who find they have an addiction to pornography collection.
“In some ways, however, the efforts of your group appear deeply misguided to us. The obvious way to see why this is is to look at the title of your project, ‘Combating Paedophile Information Networks in Europe’.
“An expressed desire to ‘combat’, or wage war, against the information networks of a group that includes large numbers of completely law-abiding and conscientious citizens is an open affront to democratic civilization. Our church, which currently meets in a closed internet site (an open one is in preparation), is a ‘paedophile information network’ beyond doubt, even if most of the ‘information’ consists of scriptural studies, prayers and prayer requests, and personal reflections. Erotic material is not within our format.
“All communication involves exchange of information, and your proclaimed ‘combat’ against any and all communication amongst members of our minority groups appears dictatorial and intolerable. However, possibly your group title is poorly worded and you would be willing to alter it, or compose later group titles, in a way that is consistent with the nature and principles of democratic societies. If you do not intend to ban freedom of speech, freedom of association, and freedom of religion for paedophiles, ephebephiles and androphiles, please alter your terminology.
“In parenthis, we do note that your most recent EU grant for this project is dated 2004, and the group’s website has been removed. Perhaps this working group is no longer functional, but I think that its nomenclature may reflect an ongoing paradigm that needs to be addressed. Assuming you are still active in your field, you are an ideal person to address it.
“We are aware that some political efforts are being made within the EU to suppress all freedom of speech for our minorities, even making it a crime to administer or host a website where we can communicate among ourselves (see Addendum). This is allegedly being done to protect children, but is based on numerous misconceptions about what our communications consist of. In the long run, this effort, like all efforts at stereotyping conscientious minority citizens as members of their criminal sub-minority (e.g., stereotyping all Italians as Mafia) is certain to embarrass those who participated in it. This is not a side of history that you or any other academic should wish to be on.
“Your reputation in the long run, and those of your colleagues, depends on your ending your campaign of stereotyping and your perceived open rejection of universal democratic freedoms. You will come out best, in the long run, if you correctly label the object of your interest, which is people who criminally interfere with children or participate vicariously in this criminal interference.
“Yours sincerely, Christiaan Xaviereis.”
The matter did not end here because Christiaan went on to post an extrardinary and brilliant essay titled ‘Essence of Childhood Violated: Ethel Quayle's new Spirit of Child Pornography as a menace to free speech in areas unrelated to porn’ on the closed forum of his group, which can be accesed at http://www.cjat.org/ipb/index.php?showtopic=245/.
This was seen by the unrelated group of ‘intelligent marginalised individuals’ who communicate over their own private forum and what follows is a flavour of their responses.
“Today, (appeared) a most important article, culled from a website many in this forum may be inclined to turn a disgusted back on (the ‘Church of Jesus Amongst the Teachers’ site). Anyone who hasn’t yet read it really, really ought to as it’s one of the most forensically rigorous and ethically sane responses to the monstrous ideology of paedo-hysteria I have yet seen.
“Professor Ethel Quayle, with her equally nutty boyfriend, Professor Max Taylor, have had a massive impact on the formulation of ‘child pornography’ law and sentencing policy throughout Europe and, increasingly, in the US. The rest of the planet may well follow suit. They have received astonishingly generous funding from government sources to give their moralistic agenda at the swivel-eyed COPINE project at the University of Cork a veneer of academic respectability. This is the project which formulated the ‘levels of indecency’ for so-called ‘child abuse images’ our prosecutorial State is using so zealously to smash harmless, intelligent and productive lives to smithereens. As the author of the analysis puts it, Quayle is “… heavily fortified in socially constructed legitimacy – all the right degrees, committees, job titles, connections, jargon, and academic back-scratching history, not to mention socially approved sexualities.”
“To cut a long story short, Quayle, Taylor and their associates have insidiously infected our ruling ideology (the ‘Mad Master Narrative’ I’ve been bleating on about) with groundless moralistic presuppositions of a virtually psychotic nature. They are seriously arguing that all visual (and, presumably, verbal) depictions of a ‘child’ in an erotic scenario, including a cartoon child, amounts to an assault on the ‘essence of childhood.’ And these lunatic opinions (they are not based on anything as unreliable as empirical evidence – they’re just asserted in all COPINE's publications as unquestionable absolutes) appear to have been adopted, hook, line and sinker, by law courts, prosecution lawyers, law enforcement agencies and, of course, right on social workers and probation officers throughout the western world.
“If sexual fascism is here, these ‘academics’ are the militant, spittle-hurling Fuhrers leading the extermination campaign. Why fear ‘the mob’, who can only piss on your doorstep or daub your front door with paint, when these lunatics are in charge of ‘informing’ politicians, judges, prosecution lawyers, police officers, social workers and a raft of other earnest do-gooders? They’re the ones who can ruin your life, not a bunch of gobby ‘yobs.’
“Please read the article.”

“I read this brilliant piece of work yesterday and found it so perceptive and true. I was particularly interested in the notion of 'spiritual' abuse - with references to Plato and new-age shamanism and mumbo-jumbo. I've thought and written at length about the 'essence' of childhood, and use that seminal French work by Philippe Aries as my main guide. Childhood is an abstraction and cannot be seen outside its historical context, and like 'innocence', the word needs a great deal of defining. However, there is a certain powerful archetypal quality present in these ideas - related to sentimentality, nostalgia, the golden age motif, etc. The idea of 'spiritual' or virtual abuse plays on this archetype and manipulates it, and many of us succumb to its warped logic only too easily.
“I feel that Quayle and her followers are effectively creating a new 'religion' or belief system, one that embodies certain psychotic traits. Its proponents, cloistered in academia, are infecting those who are in positions of power, and the toxin is then filtering down into society itself.”

“A brilliant comment, H, especially the point about the role of academics in the witch hunt:
“I know that the editor of Inquisition21 has written powerfully about the survival of modes of thought originally codified in the Malleus Maleficarum in contemporary psychology and law. Quayle and her deranged associates have effectively written the text of the modern Malleus Maleficarum which the prosecutorial State is using to destroy huge numbers of intelligent, productive and valuable human beings throughout the Western world. And no prominent academics seem prepared to challenge the preposterous intellectual foundations of her work.
“The 'Quayle Effect' demonstrates chillingly the terrifying power of fanatical ideologies, which spread insidiously outward from their academic enclaves. A phrase used by the radical psychoanalyst Jean Laplanche occurs to me: he described the emergence of 'psychotic enclaves of good and evil', both within the mind and within cultures (minds in powerful social roles are in a position to feed this mad pathology into the wider culture, where it becomes 'normality' or 'common sense'). This is secular voodoo, not science.”

One can judge for oneself if the work of Quayle and Taylor is part of the modern Malleus Maleficarum.

This was a fascinating dialogue for me as I had already written about Quayle and Taylor, because of their remarkable belief that they and other ‘appropriate’ individuals could view images that we and other ‘inappropriate’ individuals could not - in other words, judges and policemen do not get erections. Max Taylor had become so knowledgeable about child pornography that the IPCE was recommending one of his most comprehensive articles as the best source on where to find it. After he and partner Quayle achieved notoriety through their Copine project, Taylor was quoted in a British newspaper as saying that if you nuked the US you would get rid of most of the world’s child porn.
